Open an account online up to ~3 months before you fly, transfer funds in, then activate with your passport at a branch. The big four have fee-free international-student accounts:

🔢 Get your Tax File Number (TFN)
You need a TFN to work legally and to be taxed correctly. Apply after you arrive, online via the ATO — it's 100% free and posted to your Australian address in ~28 days. Never pay an agent for this.

You'll need your passport and an Australian postal address (your accommodation is fine). Apply directly here:

Give your TFN to your employer and bank once it arrives — without it you'll be taxed at the highest rate.

📍 Your state: transport & services
Every state runs its own transport card and government service centre. Pick yours — or let us detect it from your location.
Links go to official government and bank websites. Transport concessions for international students are limited and differ by state and institution — most students pay full adult fares, so check with your university. Processing times, fees and rules can change; always confirm on the official site. Koott doesn't earn commission from anyone listed here.
